"Positive and constructive", Belén Jiménez Fernández-Palacios tells about her Mobility stay abroad

Belén Jiménez Fernández-Palacios, researcher at the 3D Optical Metrology (3DOM) Unit at our Center or Materials and Microsystems (FBK-CMM), is one of the scholars who spent a study period in France, at the "CNRS MAP-GAMSAU laboratory", the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, with the research group for the Application des Méthodes Scientifiques à l’Architecture et à l’Urbanismeat the École Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture in Marseilles

Through the "Mobility" program, established by Fondazione Bruno Kessler in Trento to foster the professional growth of researchers by means of international mobility experiences, Belén Jiménez Fernández-Palacios, a native of Spain, spent four months on the town on the seaside of the Mediterranean Sea in France, intensifying her relationships with the scientific community.

Below, in a brief interview, she tells about her experience.

Dr. Jiménez Fernández-Palacios, how would you define, with two adjectives, your study / work period abroad?

Positive and constructive.

What topics related to your research activities were you able to deepen your knowledge in?

In the study of the NUBES on-line platform, for the viewing, description, analysis and sharing of complex 3D models based on real objects and also on the optimization of both the geometry and the radiometric information of complex 3D models, with the aim of finding the best compromise between the size of the model, the precision and resolution, in order to obtain an on-line real time fluid interaction.

In which way do the research activities conducted by the researchers at your host organization relate to the studies you are carrying out at FBK?

Thanks to the learnings and the use of the NUBES on-line platform (developed by the CNRS MAP-GAMSAU laboratory) I will be able to offer to FBK's 3DOM Unit a better solution for the usability, the management and the sharing (for research, education, dissemination, etc) of complex 3D models.

Which research tools and interactions were you able to experience?

The CNR-MAP GAMSAU laboratory develops its research by applying scientific methods in the context of Architecture and City planning, with the participation of architects, engineers, historians, computer scientists, etc. with a multi-disciplinary approach. Working in such a context, allowed me not only to learn new techniques and methodologies, but also to understand how to approach a topic from multiple standpoints.

More generally, to which extent was your research enriched?

The study of on-line platforms, not only for viewing 3D models, but also for describing, analyzing and sharing 3D data is a relatively new topic for me. In Marseilles, I also had the chance to study optimization methodologies that I can now apply to various applications and future projects of the 3DOM group here at the Foundation.

Are there future collaborations in the pipeline with the French group?

The CNRS MAP-GAMSAU laboratory is currently partecipating together with FBK and other partners from across Europe to the 3D-ICONS project, funded in the framework of the program in support of the  ICT European Commission policies.

Tell us about a story or a person that characterized your stay.

All the researchers of the Center were really nice and collaborative. I breathed a very nice climate and found a stimulating working environment that made me feel at home right from the start.

In particular, I remember the Center's Director, Livio de Luca, for his outstanding way of relating to people, non only as a professional but also as a person.
